My Wound healing on low fat raw vegan (warning graphic)
Long time no blog
Have been busy working on 30bananasaday, still deciding on how the Private banana club will pan out. I have also been working on my mentoring site, you can check it out here…
I have been running 4 times a week and not much else at the moment. I am going to join the local gym here (because I get one month free membership) and pump my muscles back up again. I haven’t pumped iron properly in about 2.5 years since leaving the gym!! Woah, enough is enough!
Today I thought I would share about my fabulous wound-healing on a low fat raw vegan lifestyle. Back at the start of 2008 I got my very first road bike, boy was I EXCITED! I hadn’t been on a bike for about 10years so I was keen to get my legs back. The first day was great, I was gliding along with the traffic, feeling pretty confident and the day went off without a hitch.
The next day I wasn’t so lucky! We were scooting along beside the traffic when all of a sudden there was a parked car in the lane we were in . I had to think quickly, there was no room to move to the lane beside us so I chose to take the path. How did I get up onto the path?? I attempted to jump my thin-tyred road bike up on the gutter like you would with a mountain bike – not such an easy move to pull off as a novice! I hit the gutter on the side and my ultra light bike just collapsed on top of me, mostly on my right leg. As I was falling, the chain ring starting cutting into my lower leg and left the following….
Chain ring wound 08
Amazingly I didn’t experience any pain during the crash. The pain and discomfort came later, during healing. I didn’t take one painkiller or drug of any sort. Against just about everyone’s advice, I decided to let nature do it’s thang and not get stitches. As you can see from the pic, I had grease from the chain ring on the outside of the wound. I couldn’t really get the oil off without causing too much disruption to the wound but it ended up just sort of dissolving after a while anyway.
It took a few months for my body to bridge the large gap with new skin, during this time I wasn’t sure whether to cover the wound or not. Everyone has their different view so I asked myself the question “what would I have done in nature?”. I went with my instinct and left it uncovered, bathed it in salt water and exposed it to the sun. Good intentions to leave it uncovered however not really ideal as I kept hitting my wound on things and reopened it several times. The scab that was forming was also getting interrupted by the water when I was showering and salt-water bathing, it was near impossible to keep it dry hence the scab would continually dissolve – it became pretty frustrating!
I ended up covering it up which kept it moist (but not wet) with fluids from the wound which enabled it to heal more quickly. Before I decided to bandage it, I was also getting random stuff in it and that really wasn’t fun either. Even though I covered it most of the time, I would regularly remove the bandage and expose it to the sun, that felt really good (and intuitive), I was careful not to let it get too dry. It was amazing watching the wound gradually heal over time, observing the deep layers of new flesh weave and begin to rise to the surface to fill the void. At the end of the day I found covering this wound and keeping it moist (with its own fluids) to be the most effective for healing.
To add to my woes during my healing phase… a few weeks later I injured just below the wound (the 3 spot scars in the pic below) by running into a pole on my bike! lol it was the only pole for about 1km too!
Here is the wound today, 2 years on…
So for the people who are skeptical of ones healing ability on a low fat raw vegan lifestyle… there is no need to fear! I have totally put it to the test. My healing has been amazing and no wonder, I’m providing my body with the ideal alkaline environment to heal in. Can you imagine how impeded your bodies healing ability must be with acid-forming meat and dairy clogging the channels of elimination? Digestion is the most energy demanding task the body has to perform so it makes sense to ease the burden on digestion and elimination as much as possible by eating simply, i.e – fruits and greens. This way the healing energy can go towards our wound instead of our digestion. Meat takes days and days to move through the colon in comparison to fruits and greens that take under 24hrs.
So to summarise..
* Clean wound well in saltwater, rinse with fresh water
* Expose to sun regularly
* Cover wound lightly (not sticking to the wound) with an appropriate bandage
* Change bandage daily – to every few days
* Eat an alkaline fruits and vegie diet to optimize healing
I am off for now,
Stay fruity cutie

P.S – Now I have a lovely butterfly (in flight) scar

Fab story. I overcame my squeamishness when I saw your lovely, smiling picture. And I’m in admiration of your inspirational bravery. Well done girl friend!
Thanks Lin I appreciate that!
Wow nasty! You recovered so well, good going sister xx
Oh my goodness…. that picture is indeed GRAPHIC! Such a gaping wound! So glad that your wound has healed nicely now.
I myself had a very bad crash last year when the guy riding in front of me fell, and I ended up sailing over my handlebars and hitting the ground on my chest, puncturing my lung and getting a pneumothorax. My hip and hands still bear the scars one year later.
I agree that digestion takes up a lot of energy. What do you think about fasting? I read that when we fast, our body devotes its energy more fully to healing itself, since it no longer has to expend energy on digesting.
Your wound was awful. I agree we should eat fruits specially when you’re getting older for the fibers. Thanks for sharing I will start eating more fruits than the regular meal.
Thanks for the info, I think we can really benefit in eating more fruits everyday. I know it is really good for the skin, it makes your skin more supple. I am amazed that it heals wounds.
I am a fruit lover, and for your info you should eat fruit before your meal. If you eat fruit after meal it would turn into acid. I am wondering if if you have wound should you eat before or after?
If you eat fruit after a cooked meal it won’t turn into acid but it will run into the cooked food and cause problems. Remove the cause, eat fruit and leave out the cooked food and you will have no problems at all.
Banana is not just good for the skin, it is also good for the heart and is very rich in potassium. However thanks because i never thought it helps in curing wounds.
hi cass, it is a very good question if fasting helps in healing wounds?. It seems hard for me, looks like if im going to skip meals I’ll be loosing my energy. But i am most willing to fast if it would heal specially that kind of wound.
Dear Freelee, thank you very much for your article. I have pretty much the same wound like you had by falling on a wall with my lower leg. I have now the problem that the wound does not close itself after one month. There is a lot of mucus and pus in the wound. I am anxious because it takes so long. Do I have to put away the pus by a doctor? Is there the possibility that it may infect the bones, like the doctor warned me. I did not get any tetanus injection or any antibiotics, but I let the doctor made stitches. The wound looks good and healed but than I swam in a river and after this the wound opened again and the pus came. This is the case now for over a months. Have you got pus in your wound? How does it go away? What can I do to let the pus go away so the wound can heal? I am very thankfull for an answer. Best Regards Arne (11 years raw-vegan and triathlet)
Interesting, I find that when I eat a lot of fruit, such as bananas, I heal slower when I have a cut. Reasoning I suppose is that there would be too much sugar in the blood, which reduces rate of healing. Reduce the sugary foods, up the other foods(standard human diet, not SAD), and healing occurs quicker, at least for me.
That’s interesting, how long have you been 100% LFRV?
Some other experienced and succesfull rawfoodist told me this also to substitute my fruit intake with more green leavy vegetables or weeds. Fruits gives more sugar and therfore ore energy if I am clean inside. I feel clean mostly the time but I know that I have still stocks of the old bad food which I ate the first 19 years of my life. I can see that I detoxify with more fruits faster and that nuts and avocado (the yummy fatty plant food) brings me in a better mood and i feel better. Maybe because this fatty food stop the detoxifying process. Another thing is that I live in North-Germany, so it is too cold now in October to let the leg free of pants. That complicates all.
I also have at the same right foot fungal infection (mykose) at skin and nails. This started in 2003, when I walked to much time in my black leather shoes on the pavement of London streets. The big toes starts to liquid or juice and hat an infection. I did not put any pharmaceutical chemistry on it. I always tries to go barfoot in sandals to let fresh air and sun on it, but in fall, winter until 15. April I have to wear shoes and socks. .I wish I cold live during the cold months in the south or at the south-side of the earth to try it a longer time. Maybe the short time of 6 months is not enough. Do you Freelee knows what to do to be free of mykose? I have heard mykose likes sugar. maybe also fruit sugar?!! I started one time to take Teatree oil, footbalsam and olive oil & apple cider and propolis. I also peed at my food n the shower. What I have not tried is to put Aloe Vera on it and I did not fast for more than 4 days. I detoxify also by training and rawfood almost every second week. What would you recommend? Are the pharmaceutical right with that fungal infections does not go away without medicaments? After so long time I really do not know what shall I do?
better do fasting with alkaline fruit juices
Fasting wasn’t an option due to my busy lifestyle at the time
I actually make sure I don’t get TOO much protein, why? Because too much protein in our bodies, especially from animal sources results in an overly acidic environment forcing the body to leach calcium from the bones & teeth to ‘buffer’ the acidity. The resulting conditions are arthritis, osteoporosis, tooth-decay & cancer to name a few. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends 10% and under is more than sufficient to meet our daily protein requirements. There isn’t even a medical terminology for “protein deficiency”!
There is absolutely no need for animal products in one’s diet, plant foods contain all 8 essential amino acids required for optimal health.
Plants are the only foods eaten by elephants, horses, and hippos – do you see them having a problem growing all the muscle, bone, and tissue they need?
I hope you feel better but I think I didn’t want to see this picture of your wounded leg. Anyway best regards
Thanks. Well it’s a pretty important part of the story so I had to show it!
Wonderful story. I actually work at a wound care clinic. Would you mind if I print this story and pics, with names removed, to show my Program Director? We are always looking for ways to encourage our clients with their healing. Thank you.
Cool yes of course you can
) It was an awfully deep wound and healed so so well
