Does fruit rot your teeth?
I had a bit of a rest day, cycled about 15kms moderate intensity. I have been getting the most amazing spring water from the stream beside the road I ride past to & from home.
It’s just sooo alive! Water is a living element & it needs to be free & jumping, twirling, swirling, churning everywhere! I can feeeel the difference after I drink it, extremely invigorating. Its important to ‘purify’ the water within us, peeps who use words like ‘I love you’ & ‘thankyou’ have beauty-full water within.
Isn’t it amazing how we have roughly the same amount of water in ourselves as the planet does? Well its not really that amazing to me as I know we are just mini versions of Gaia anyway.
Ok so now onto teeth. I noticed there have been a few discussions on various rawfood forums about teeth problems so I feel it’s an appropriate time to talk about teeth!
The fruit always gets the blame when it comes to teeth issues, I can understand why peeps think this because that’s what Dentist’s have been telling us since we were bubs. Unfortunately just more propaganda & fruit-bashing.
I used to think that fruit was the culprit as well until I became low fat raw vegan and didn’t get anymore issues… Honestly I’m not even trying to ‘hype up’ the low fat lifestyle or anything like that, I’m just being 100% honest and i know many peeps who do this lifestyle 100% and don’t have any issues either.
In the past 2years I may have ‘felt’ my teeth in a negative way maybe once or twice, slight pain that lasted an hour or so, when did I have it? Immediately after a dried fruit and nut meal. Dried fruit is very sticky hence it clings to your teeth, in our cavities etc… combine this with rancid nuts (ones we didn’t pick fresh ourselves) and sometimes we can run into problems…. this isn’t the case every time but it’s the only time I’ve ever had any minor issue.
When we eat nuts & seeds small particles remain in the crevices of our teeth. The acid formed in the mouth after eating nuts has been documented. From what I gather acid waste products that corrode tooth enamel is a metabolic byproduct of the bacteria that digests the dried fruit, this bacteria is highly acidic. If our teeth are subjected to these acidic conditions continually then tooth decay results. Also I would rethink your diet if it is high in complex carbohydrates (like pasta, rice, bread etc), these foods a long with dairy & meat are very acid-forming.
So the big culprit with tooth decay (& osteoporosis) is highly acidic food choices like meat, dairy and grains. After eating these foods the body has to leach the mineral calcium from our teeth and bones to neutralise the acidic environment created…excess acid in the bloodstream can lead to a host of health issues not just teeth erosion. Also coffee & other intense acids like softdrinks can erode your teeth. Fluoride in our tap water has also been identified as a culprit. Refined sugar products like lollies etc are teeth-rotters and have to go too.
For best teeth ofcourse I recommend peeps eat a properly combined low fat raw vegan diet (that’s 98% fruit in my case & 2% greens roughly). If this is not your diet of choice then I recommend you reconsider eating meat, dairy & grains especially if you are having teeth issues…
Also be aware that dried fruit is not an optimal food choice, it’s great as a ‘sometimes’ food or for emergencies but generally I suggest you reach for the high water content fruits. I never recommend anyone eats rancid nuts, they are just too acid-forming, sometimes they are 5years old or more before they hit your lips! We need to keep the acid/alkaline balance in check. I hear different levels but I believe our PH has to be in the range of high six-low seven. Fruits are all very alkaline on the body when eaten in their whole water-rich state.
On the ‘teeth-cleaning’ front…I haven’t used toothpaste in over 3years, all I use is a toothbrush and water once or twice a day. I may swirl water in my mouth after fruit meals but generally not.
For those of you who didn’t see my dear friends teeth, I will post the pic again, he was a high fat/protein raw meat eater…you can see the results created from an overly acidic environment for yourself…
its disturbing and a great reminder to eat a diet we are physiologically-designed to eat, whole ripe raw fruits & greens… not cooked, boiled, broiled, grilled, baked, bbq’d, steamed, battered, crumbed, fried, sauted, simmered, poached, roasted, toasted, microwaved, irradiated foods that are unrecognisable to the human teeth & digestive system!!!
Ok that’s it for now, have a lovely fruity day!

Oh my… Stick to fruit, keep the beaut.
I didn’t have the chance to read this piece in its entirety, but wonder why you didn’t talk about the cleansing aspects of the fruit sugar. Which occurs when folks eat large volumes of fruit. The fruit sugar cleanses poison from the blood and the loosening up of acidic waste will eat away at the teeth or loosen the teeth as well. With proper, safe bowel cleansing this can be avoided. I would like to say, it is refreshing to read something on the web, from someone that gets what this life is about. I like your take on water. Yes we and the planet are similar as we and the cosmos are the same. Peace to you. Keep spreading the good word. Check out Release NYC at releasenyc.com

Hey Tom, u didn’t have a minute to read the whole blog?! Come on!
) I only have limited space to talk cover everything but I can add about the cleansing aspects too. Thanks for your info.
I don’t actually subscribe to colon cleansing though and believe we should address the cause of ‘why’ we need a ‘cleanse’… remove the cause rather than address the symptom which is brought about by an unhealthy lifestyle…
Great to have you input! Thanks for the link
Have a fruitful day X
hey girl, thanks for the post!
I am still learning about 811/raw. I didn’t understand why my teeth had become worse after doing 811. I’ve taken some steps to change things and know that eventually when internals are well, and absorption is better that I my teeth will feel better. I can still do 811 I just need to be 100% and brush with soap or paste
<3 cheers to healthy, beautiful teeth!
Hey Sabrina! I don’t understand why your teeth would’ve become worse on 811 either? Its important to establish whether you were actually following 811 to the T. How long did you do 811, 100%?
Thanks for your comment! X
nice post! I am really tripping on how so many over at gitmr blame fruit/811 for their teeth problems. Are people just not taking care of their teeth? has it just become popular to bash 811? not only are they blaming it for their teeth problems but all their health problems.. it’s irritating..
thanks Todd! Ah yeh GITMR isn’t too 811/fruit friendly unfortunately, that’s why I started 30BaD! Yes it is popular to bash 811, i just keep remembering the 3 stages of truth…:)
Thanks for poppin in my friend

Nice article! I enjoyed reading your story of going low-fat vegan.
As a dental student, I can tell you that fresh fruit is good for your teeth. It stimulates your salivary glands when you chew it which has a positive effect on your oral health. Most other forms of fruit aren’t good for your teeth (think dried fruit, fruit juice, canned fruit in syrup, jams & jellies, etc.)
Also, you mentioned that grains and dairy can be bad for your teeth. If you choose whole grains, the enzymes in your saliva can’t digest that into sugar very well and you should be fine. White bread can be broken down by your saliva into simple sugars which can cause cavities.
Wow that’s great to hear from a dentist Tom!
Tom, but there’re plenty of simple sugars in fresh ruits too, – just to be consistent in terminology – , though yes not as sticky as starches perhaps, but ripe bananas can stick similarly.
And, Freelee, being that plenty of people have had tooth decay problems on high fruit diets, which even Doug Graham has clearly stated on another post attributed to him here on 30bad, DG states that quality greens are necessary in the diet, if one is to succeed in the direction of, or ‘truly’ as, an 811(otherwise bring on the ‘other sources’ such as milk products). High meat diets(say 50/50) in history are known for good tooth health, as can be seen by the skeletons and further confirmed by doing isotopic analysis, in addition to plenty of standard human(omnivorous) meat eaters I’ve known throughout my life, who don’t even think about this per se, they just live and eat moderately, and enjoy life. Just saying, for balance of consideration.
And don’t forget that meat is one of the most acid-forming foods there are!
Hey its great that we can go into what is a radical diet for many with all the advice possible and to be open minded to that advice. I have heard too – from a fruitarian – that tooth loss does sometimes happen when you switch from a regular diet to a fruitarian one. This is because there is toxic waste stored up around the gums and when the fruit comes along and cleanses all that it can make the teeth wobbly, its great to hear that this can be foreseen and managed though. And Id much rather keep an eye out for the odd wobbly tooth than all the thousands of health complaints that are more likely – if not certain – to happen as a result of the SAD diet
